Uterus Cancer: How Dangerous is It?

 Nilutpal Gogoi

Women's Issues Articles

Endometrial cancer is the most common type of uterus cancer. It is so termed as the cancerous cells abnormally develop in the endometrium lining. It is also known as the cancer of the uterus or uterine cancer.

WHAT EXACTLY IS UTERUS CANCER?

Endometrial cancer is the most common type of uterus cancer. It is so termed as the cancerous cells abnormally develop in the endometrium lining. It is also known as the cancer of the uterus or uterine cancer.

UNDERSTANDING CANCER

To understand cancer, we must first know that this ailment begins in the human cells. The cells are the primary unit of life. Cells combine to form tissues. Tissues come together to form organs. Cancers are malignant tumors. Tumors are masses of extra tissues. Tumors are formed when unnecessary extra cells are formed in our body. Actually new cells (the basic unit of our life) are born as per the body requirement and after the old ones die. But the malignant or cancerous cells keep on forming and constitute tumors or growths. They also spread abnormally fast. Tumors can also be non-cancerous or benign.

MALIGNANT UTERUS CANCER CAN BE LIFE-THREATENING

Uterus cancer can spread (metastasize), to the surrounding nearby blood vessels or nerves. And, from one lymph node, uterus cancer can affect other lymph nodes. Even the bones, liver, and lungs can be affected. Doctors give the newly spread tumor the same name as the mother tumor has as their characteristics remain identical.

CAUSES OF UTERUS CANCER

There is still no unanimity among the medical specialists as to the exact causes of uterus cancer or uterine cancer. Nonetheless, there is agreement among them that uterus cancer cannot spread from one person to another. In other words, uterus cancer is not contagious. Mentionably, though uterus cancer generally happens after menopause, yet it can take place as menopause starts.

TYPES OF UTERUS CANCER

There are different types of uterus cancer. You would be surprised to know that cancerous cells of the uterus at times spread to the lungs. This is not lung cancer but uterine cancer that has metastasized (spread). This 'distant' ailment is treated as uterus cancer. Another typical form of uterus cancer is uterine sarcoma. It develops in the myometrium (muscle). There is another uterine cancer that starts in the cervix region.

SYMPTOMS OF UTERUS CANCER

The most common symptom of uterus cancer is profuse bleeding from the vagina. Many have the misconception that such abnormal vaginal bleeding is symptom of menopause and do not pay adequate attention to it. This is wrong! Such vaginal bleeding can begin only as a watery flow having just a streak of blood. But slowly more and more blood flows along with it.

IMMEDIATE PRECAUTIONS

Immediately consult a gynecologist the moment you see any or some of the following symptoms: Pain in the pelvic portion; pain while urinating; pain during intercourse and/or abnormal vaginal discharge or bleeding. Of course, these signs can be due to factors other than those related to uterus cancer. Hence, seek expert's advice without delay.

THE RISK FACTORS

The confusing fact is that many women having uterus cancer risk factors do not develop this ailment. On the other hand, there are umpteen cases of women not having the risk factors contracting uterus cancer. Nevertheless, the risk factors do help in the early diagnosing of uterus cancer. Here is an overview of the risk factors that may aggravate into uterus cancer.

Age factor: First, uterus cancer has been found to take place among women in the 50 plus age group.

Race: White-skinned women get uterus cancer more than, say the African-American women.

Endometrial hyperplasia: Second, many women after crossing 40 years suffer from endometrial hyperplasia. Though it is basically benign (not cancerous), yet it can sometimes develop into cancer. Endometrial hyperplasia happens due to the increase in cells uterus linings. The common signs of endometrial hyperplasia are bleeding in the post-menopause phase, bleeding after successive periods, and menstrual periods that are heavy. Physicians generally recommend progesterone (hormone treatment) or hysterectomy (uterus removal) to check endometrial hyperplasia from degenerating into cancer.

Colon cancer. Women suffering from colon or colorectal cancer that is inherited also may develop uterus cancer. Colon cancer affects the colon in the large intestine or/and the fag end portions of the rectum prior to the anus.

HRT: Third, women undergoing HRT (hormone replacement therapy) also have risk of contracting uterus cancer. HRT controls menopausal symptoms, prevents bone thinning (osteoporosis), and also reduces chances of stroke or heart ailments.

Prolonged use of hormone: Prolonged use of the female hormones estrogen sans progesterone can lead to uterus cancer. It is always advisable to combine the use of both primarily because progesterone acts as a potential uterus shield.

Over-exposure to estrogen: Women entering puberty early or reaching menopause late or those who have not borne any children remain exposed to estrogen for a long period. They too suffer a high risk.

Use of medicines having estrogen: One such commonly used medication is Tamoxifen. It is prescribed as a preventive measure against breast cancer. But long-time use of estrogen can lead to over-exposure to estrogen.

Obesity: The primary reason why obese women develop uterus cancer more than their thinner sisters is simple. Our body manufactures certain percentages of estrogen within the fatty tissues.

Diabetes BP: Since obesity is also linked with diabetes, the diabetic women may also have uterus cancer. Similar is the case with women having high blood pressure (BP).

DIAGNOSIS OF UTERUS CANCER

The ideal diagnosis for uterus cancer can constitute one or a combination of the following tests. They are the biopsy, Transvaginal ultrasound, Pap test, and Pelvic exam.

Biopsy: In biopsy, a tissue sample is removed from the lining of the uterus. This is a simple process and is done in the doctor's clinic itself. However, in complex situations, the patient may have to undertake the D&C process. This D&C (dilation and curettage) operation is a day-long affair. The tissue is examined by a pathologist for the probable presence of various cancerous conditions like hyperplasia and cells. In the post-biopsy stage, the patient may experience cramps and also have bleeding from the vagina for some time.

For the patient's knowledge: The patient needs to clarify certain positions with the doctor prior to going in for biopsy. These are about (i) the biopsy type she may have to undertake and the reason(s) why she should go for the test; (ii) The approximate time biopsy would take; (iii) Would she have to be anaesthetized; (iv) Whether biopsy be painful? (v) The risks and after effects of biopsy; (vi) And, if in the event of cancer being detected what the steps she would have to take and from whom she would get the consultations.

Transvaginal ultrasound: In this test, sound waves of high frequency is aimed at the uterus via an instrument that is inserted within the vagina. The sound echo patterns make a picture. And, the doctor can have a clear idea of the actual state by examining this picture. But, transvaginal ultrasound becomes impossible if the endometrium is too thick. Then, the patient may have to go for a biopsy.

Pap test: In Pap test, cells are collected from the upper vagina and cervix portions. Pathological examination of the cells is done to find out if there are any cancerous or abnormal cells. The problem with Pap test is that it fails to identify abnormal cells within the uterus. Hence the doctors usually collect the cells via biopsy. Nonetheless, Pap test can readily detect the cervical cancerous cells.

Pelvic exam: The Pelvic exam checks the rectum, bladder, uterus, and vagina. The presence of any lumps or alterations in their sizes and shapes are clear indications of the likely presence of abnormal tumors or cancerous cells. The doctor checks the cervix and vagina via an instrument. This implement known as speculum is first inserted into the vagina.

These Ovarian Cancer Symptoms Never to Ignore

Health

• By Global Vision NGO •

Ovarian cancer is the deadliest of all female reproductive cancer disease. While other types of cancer like breast, uterine and cervical cancercan be detected early, but only few chances are there to get ovarian cancer diagnosed before they're advanced.

It's difficult to detect ovarian cancer in early stage, but if diagnosed early 90% of women will live 5 years or more. Earlier ovarian cancer was a silent killer, but technology advancement it shows some symptom in some patients. If women notice the symptoms then they can report to Obstetrics and Gynecologist for further diagnoses.

Researchers said that women diagnosed with ovarian cancer have reported some new symptoms which occur frequently and are more severe.

The most common signs of ovarian cancer include:

• Increased abdominal size

• Problems eating, such as feeling full quickly after a meal

• Nausea

• Pain anywhere in the abdomen

• Back pain

• Weight loss

• Bloating or a swollen abdomen

• Urinary frequency, urgency or difficulty

• Constipation, diarrhea

• Pelvic pain or pressure

• Vaginal bleeding

• Painful sex

• Changes in menstruation

The problem with ovarian cancer is that it develop quickly, even frequent visit to Obstetrics and Gynecologist. A yearly visit, pelvic exam and other check up is ideal to stay aware of the disease.

Women with ovarian cancer generally do not have an inherited gene mutation. Unlike other cancer in women it is not inherited gene mutation which raises the risk of developing cancer. There are two genes - BRCA1 and BRCA2 - which significantly raise the risk which also cause breast cancer. The BRCA1 gene is estimated to increase ovarian cancer risk by 35% to 70% and the BRCA2 by 10% to 30%. Women with close relatives who have/had ovarian cancer, as well as breast cancer, have a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer.

From many years researcher are working without success for an effective ways to screen ovarian cancer in women.  Genetic screening can also be determined whether somebody carries these cancer genes. Ovarian cancer starts in fallopian tubes rather than in the ovaries so it is better to remove the fallopian tubes and keep ovaries intact in women. But nothing can be declared before any verified treatment.

Studies have showed that long term use of birth control pill and breastfeeding may help reduce a women's risk to develop ovarian cancer. It's not the only one method, but a protective measure to lower risk of cancer. Regular visits to doctor is always a good idea. Make an appointment to doctor when one above mentioned symptoms.

Lung Cancer And Blood Cancer – Two Killers That Are Still Ruining Millions of Innocent Lives

Rohan Sinha

Health Articles | September 12, 2013

Cancer is still a major threat to millions of people. Lung cancer and blood cancer are two most common types of cancer. The good thing is we now have more treatment options and that these treatments are more effective than the earlier ones.

Let's understand cancer first –

Cancer is the condition wherein cells in your body leave the normal patter and start growing abnormally. This disruption to the process of cell production causes serious complications. The disease can develop in almost all areas of your body. It means cancer can develop in your brain, blood, lung, breast, bone, anal, appendix, colon, anywhere and everywhere. The good thing is early diagnosis and treatment is available for most types of cancer.

Lung cancer –

It's a major killer worldwide. And smoking is the chief cause behind this cancer. Every time you smoke, you increase your chances of developing cancer in your lungs. So you better stay away from smoking. There are medicines available that can help you weaken your craving for smoking. Counseling can also help.

Treatment for lung cancer –

Treatments may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or a combination of all these. Choice of treatment may vary from one patient to another, one case to another. These treatments do come with side-effects; however, with medications and guidance, they can be managed pretty well. Patients and their families only need to ensure they look only for the best cancer hospitals in India for treatments, and be in constant touch with their surgical team.

Blood cancer –

It's cancer of the blood. It develops in the bone marrow where blood cells are formed. Since this cancer affects the formation of blood cells – white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets - the patient is at a greater risk of developing infection and the organs face shortness of oxygen.

Blood cancer can be of many types. Some are more likely to happen in children, while others mostly happen in adults

Treatment for blood cancer –

Just like lung cancer, treatment options for blood cancer include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Bone marrow transplant is often required in blood cancer; the transplant replaces the diseased bone marrow with the healthy one. Only the best cancer hospitals in India have the required infrastructure and expertise to perform bone marrow transplant. The first few weeks are critical for the patient because during this period of time he/she is like a new-born baby, and at a greater risk of developing infections.

It is true that cancer – particularly lung cancer and blood cancer – is ruining countless lives around the world; however, it is also true that medical science has discovered many new and effective ways to treat most types of cancer. Hope is very much alive! And very soon we'll have a world, where nobody would die by the hands of cancer!

Breast Cancer Walk

 Sven Ullmann

Health Articles | March 3, 2007

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Numerous cancer researches have been done to understand the disease better. In women, breast cancer is the second most common cancer next to lung cancer.

There are millions of affected women in the world and 200,000 more will be diagnosed with the disease in 2007. Current statistics show that breast cancer claims the life of 1 woman every 13 minutes. It would be really beneficial if there is higher awareness on breast cancer. Knowing about the disease, its causes, symptoms, treatment and management, will greatly help patients and families of these patients understand the disease better. One of the most effective breast cancer awareness programs is the breast cancer walk. In the United States, there is the Breast Cancer 3-Day benefit. A fund raising program participated by men and women who want to make a difference in the lives of these breast cancer victims. The program involves 3 days or 60 miles of walking and participated by millions of people from all over the nation. It is a chance for the participants to learn about cancer and at the same time help in promoting awareness. Although it may seem a lot of work, the breast cancer walk is actually fun. Since a breast cancer walk is not a race, participants can actually walk leisurely. It's the perfect chance to meet people from all walks of life and share experiences. The route is filled with safety and support nets with people standing by to offer food and drinks. There are medical volunteers on stand by for emergency medical attention. At the end of each day, participants get to rest, shower, and eat a scrumptious dinner. Comfortable sleeping bags and tents are supplied for a good night's rest. All these friendly accomondations can make the Breast Cancer Walk a truely unique experience.

If you want to participate but feel like you are not ready for such physical activity, you should not worry. There are training manuals provided that will put you in perfect shape to walk in no time at all. Training walks will even be organized in your area to practice long-distance walking. Since the Breast Cancer 3-day Series are held in different cities like Boston, Chicago, Seattle, Michigan and Philadelphia, you can practice at the city nearest you. It's a good idea to join in on the Breast Cancer Walk. Not only is it great exercise, but it's also fun and it's for a great cause. Since a breast cancer walk is mostly a fund raising program to support breast cancer research, education, treatment and screening, you will be asked to raise a certain amount for the cause. You would be surprised to know that most participants exceed this amount because of the amazing generosity of friends, co-workers and families. Even people you do not know will eagerly support you in your cause. Proceeds of the breast cancer walk will be distributed to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure movement, which has already generated $1 billion to date for fighting breast cancer, and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund, a public charity that is considered to one of the largest independent charitable institutions in the United States.

Is there a cure for Cancer? New Prostate Cancer Treatments Today: Zytiga And The Yunzi Mushroom?

Health • Alternative Medicine

• By Rade Radosavljevic •

This week two developments in prostate cancer have been unveiled. First, Zytiga (abiraterone acetate), an ingested pill treatment, has been found to potentially extend life by up to four months in men with spreading cancer who have already been treated with chemotherapy. Second, compound found in "turkey-tail," or Yunzi mushrooms, called polysaccharopeptide (PSP), is 100% effective for protecting against prostate tumor growth in laboratory rodents.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, prostate cancer is the second most frequently diagnosed form of cancer among men in the U.S., following skin cancer. More than 220,000 men develop the condition each year, the organization notes.

Okay, so let's start with the manufactured remedy that can allow prostate cancer victims live longer.

The new drug Zytiga, which was approved by the FDA in April, inhibits a protein that helps form male hormones. The findings may help reshape the way doctors view and treat advanced prostate cancer. Men who took the pill also saw greater responses in levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) than men who received placebo. Elevated levels of PSA may be a marker for prostate cancer.

Those men who received steroid therapy along with the new pill survived for 14.8 months, on average, compared with 10.9 months seen among those who received a placebo along with steroids. This translated into a 34% reduction in risk of dying, the study shows.

Now for the Yunzi (Coriolus versicolor) mushroom. Recent studies have indicated that there may be some scientific proof behind several natural medical treatments that have been used for hundreds of years in Asian cultures.

Lead researcher Patrick Ling comments:

"In the past, other inhibitors tested in research trials have been shown to be up to 70% effective, but we're seeing 100% of this tumor prevented from developing with PSP."

As stated, 100% of the mice that fed with water only developed prostate tumors at the end of experiment, no tumors could be found in any of the mice fed with PSP, suggesting that PSP treatment can completely inhibit prostate tumor formation. Our results not only demonstrated the intriguing anti-CSC effect of PSP, but also revealed, for the first time, the surprising chemopreventive property of oral PSP consumption against prostate cancer.

Coriolus versicolor is a mushroom of the Basidiomycetes class. It was used initially in Traditional Chinese medicine as a tonic, but recent studies suggest that it has immunostimulant and anti-tumor properties. Polysaccharide-K (PSK), known in the United States as PSP, a proprietary product derived from Coriolus, was developed for cancer treatment in Japan. When used as an adjuvant, PSK appears to improve survival rates in patients with gastric and colorectal cancers.

One clinical study demonstrated that when used in conjunction with chemotherapy, PSP may benefit patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer. Other clinical studies using Coriolus extract alone or in combination with other botanicals also suggest positive immunomodulatory effects. However, studies on breast cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, and leukemia produced mixed results. A hot water extract of Coriolus, VPS, was found to enhance development of large intestinal tumors in mice. Coriolus extracts are generally well tolerated but minor adverse effects have been reported.

Tips about Information Breast Cancer Risk Factors

Galuh Mahesa

Health Articles

Breast cancer is still unknown disease until this day, despite the fact that cancer affects nearly ten percent of women over the age of forty years around the world. Cause this killer cancer is not known even after decades of research. So it is not known why some women have a higher chance to get Breast Cancer than the others.

Although the factors kausatif are unknown, there are several risk factors have been identified. There is no medical evidence why these factors create disease is more likely to happen, but this is the study's observations. In a broad cross-section of women with risk factors have been observed, it was found that the chances of getting breast cancer is very high.

Various risk factors for breast cancer are as follows:

1. Breast cancer family history

If the brother or sister who was near the mother has breast cancer, then there is a very high likelihood that the cancer will occur sometime in your life. This tendency is observed even if distant relatives, such as cousins and aunt had breast cancer, though likely lower. Even if a brother has cancer of the breast or prostate cancer, then there are chances of getting breast cancer. This clearly shows that breast cancer walks through the family line through inheritance. Of course the possibility is very high if more than one family member has breast cancer.

2. Personal history of breast cancer

If a woman has had breast cancer in the past, then there is a great possibility that breast cancer can occur again. This is true even if the cancer has been removed although in the stage of benign. Sometimes cancer cells spread to adjacent lymph. This makes it likely that the cancer will occur in the another breast. In fact, women who have had breast cancer have 50-75% more chances to develop breast cancer in the another breast.

3. Breast disease

Some breast disease can increase the likelihood of having breast cancer. Changes in breast cells can lead to atypical hyperplasia. This condition may cause a a three-four times the increase in the chances of getting breast cancer the following year. This risk also exists if the atypical hyperplasia has occurred in other women in your family. Other conditions such as benign tumours of the breast is a condition known as fibro adenoma. However, women with fibrocystic breasts generally do not have any vulnerabilities to breast cancer. However, such a condition could make a lump and hide the real of breast tumor (if any) during mammography.

4. Lifestyle

In today's world, the lifestyle is the largest single contributing factor to the development of breast cancer among women. Some elements of lifestyle has been found to be the prevalence of breast cancer. Smoking and alcoholism in women is a major factor. Diet even pointed out as a risk factor that is important. Women who consume foods with higher cholesterol fats in it has a higher chance to hit by breast cancer. At the same time, lifestyle without engaging much in physical activity is also potentially dangerous.

5. Radiation

It has been found that women who undergo radiation therapy in their chest area at a young age have an increased risk of developing breast cancer in their life later. Radiation therapy is commonly prescribed to women with conditions such as Hodgkin's disease or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. So women who have undergone treatment as possible will get breast cancer in later years.

6.Hormonal imbalances

There are several factors which can alter the hormonal balance of the body. A few of them:

1.     Early menstrual cycle early, i.e. before the age of twelve,

2.     Because the first pregnancy after the age of thirty years,

3.     Has a pregnancy does not exist at all

4.     Have menopause end.

All of these conditions can increase the levels of estrogen in the body. This increases the risk for breast cancer to light levels. In addition to that women who use birth control pills, breast enhancement supplements, antidepressants and antihistamines and hormone supplements have a higher risk for getting breast cancer.

Above is a major risk factor for breast cancer is exposed. But because the studies on breast cancer is not yet complete, the list above is not a complete list. There is some indication of breast cancer, such as breast implant surgery; But this has not been confirmed. Implants used in previous days made of silicone gel. This is risky in terms of breast cancer. However, currently the silicone gel implant is replaced by a saline implants. This has reduced most of the risk.

Conclusion

Should also note also that women have a much higher chance to get breast cancer than men. In fact, most people think that breast cancer is a disease that only affects women. This is not true. Men can also be affected by breast cancer, but for a much lower rate than women. Also, the age is a very important factor. Your risk for getting breast cancer are much higher when the woman has crossed the age of 50 years.

Is there a cure for Cancer? Anti cancer medicine Supplier in India– What To Do They Deal In

Health • Medicine

• By Sujit Singh •

There is no doubt that hypertension is one of the most widely prevalent disorder and medical condition. It is the cause of many heart attacks, strokes and damage to vital organs like kidneys, lungs and perhaps even the liver and brain. Hence it is very important to control high blood pressure. Apart from the right medications, exercise and change in dietary habits and patterns it is also important to bring about changes in lifestyles. Avoiding too much of stress and tension is something which could help in reducing the problems associated with hypertension. However, it is very important to identify the underlying cause of hypertension and take necessary treatment accordingly.

Side by side, cancer also has become one of the deadly diseases nowadays around the world. Though cancer is curable only it is detected in first stages, but millions of people are still dying in cancer. In India cancer is treated in many prestigious hospitals and side by side, lot of anti cancer medicine suppliers in India are taking major role to fight with this disease.

It Also Works As A Drug For Correcting Erectile Dysfunction

Towards this objective there is no doubt that choosing the right medication is very important. Amongst the various medicines, tadalalfil is considered to be one of the most important drugs for treating hypertension not only in the heart but also lungs and other vital organs. Additionally it also is a drug that is very commonly useful for treating erectile disorders. Hence there is no doubt there is a big demand for this drug, both of which are of the same generic composition. Therefore when it comes to buying this drug as an importer from outside India, identifying the right medicine supplier and exporter is very important.

How To Look For Them

The internet without any doubt is the best place for identifying the right anti cancer medicine supplier in India and quite a few of them also have export quotas to fulfill. Hence it would be better to look out for such suppliers who perhaps could help in meeting the requirements both for domestic as well as export requirements. However, when identifying the right medicine supplier there are quite a few important points that must be kept in mind. First and foremost it is important to ensure that they have the required export license and also have the best quality medicines available. This is very important because hypertension drugs should be of the best quality and there cannot be any laxity on this. They should be open to strict audit and examination by those who are responsible for it.

Is There A Market Outside India

Look up to the right Medical Bureau from India because of lower cost. Since the bulk drugs that are used for making these drugs are much cheaper when compared to foreign bulk drugs, the end product also become quite cheap. However, it would be important to point out here that when it comes to identifying the right exporter from India not all importers are in favor. This is because of the perception that the quality of end products made in India may not meet the stringent quality standards which they have in place. However, almost all drugs made in India are in line with WHO standards and other such standards.

Somеtһing patients do nоt want tо hear anԁ physicians do nоt want tо say is "your cancer has metastasized."

Metastasis is tһe process wһeгeЬy cancer cells spread fгоm thе site оf tһe original tumor tо onе оr moге otһeг places іn tһе body. Anԁ wіtһ υpwarԁѕ оf 90% оf alӏ cancer suffering аnԁ death associated wіtһ metastasis, it is thе single mоѕt significant challenge tо management оf thе disease.

It's nо wonder, then, thаt а major goal оf cancer research is tо understand wһаt causes metastasis аnԁ hоw it happens.

Whу is metastasis ѕо deadly?

Mаnу dіffегent types оf cancers can spread (metastasize), including blood cancers, Ьυt it is mоѕt оften associated wіth solid tumors (like breast, prostate, oг colon). Cancer cells can spread tо mаnу dіffегent parts оf thе body, thоugһ thе mоst common sites are tһe lungs, liver, brain, anԁ bones, аnԁ eacһ kind оf cancer tends tо spread tо specific sites.

Tumor cells spread througһ 3 major paths: tһгougһ lymphatic vessels, tһгoυgһ blood vessels, anԁ аӏоng surfaces оn tһе inѕіԁе оf tһe body cavity. Carcinomas typically begin tһeiг journey νia tһе lymphatic route, tһen latеr spread viа blood vessels tо tһеіr final destination. In contrast, bone аnԁ soft tissue tumors, ог sarcomas, usυаӏlу metastasize diгectly Ьу thе blood vessel route. Onlу а small group оf tumors (including mesotheliomas аnd ovarian carcinomas) spread tһгоυgһ tһе body cavity.

Sо whу are metastatic cancer cells sо lethal? Oftеn it is becаuѕe metastatic cancer causes symptoms thаt are aӏsо common tо оtheг diseases. It is nоt unusual foг а metastatic cancer tо be discovered Ьy tests being done fог ѕоmе оtһеr condition.

Fоr example, doctors might find bone metastasis wһеn checking оn ӏоwеr Ьaсk pain, оr lung metastasis Ьecаυse а patient has shortness оf breath. Eitһeг оf tһоsе symptoms could be caused Ьy manу things othег tһan cancer ѕо tһе metastatic tumor may get diagnosed оnӏy аfter it has grown significantly. It's аӏsо possible, tһоυgһ nоt common, fоr а growing metastatic tumor tо cause symptoms Ьeforе thе primary tumor is еven found. Wһеn eіtһer оf thesе things happen, it can be harder tо treat tһе cancer successfully.

A complicated process

Remarkably, real progress іn understanding tһе processes оf metastasis has onӏу happened іn tһe lаst couple оf decades, eνеn thоυgһ tһе concept was known іn tһe 1800s. Fоr а long time metastasis was thought tо be tоo complicated, tоo complex, tо be understood. It was thought tһеre were nо rules tо һow it happened. It was nоt υntiӏ tһe late 1970s аnԁ early 1980s tһаt researchers showed tһаt theге were rules, tһat сеrtaіn tumors metastasized tо partіcυlаr organs, аnԁ tһat you could manipulate tһеm tо understand why.

Today we know tһаt metastasis involves sеνeraӏ steps, tһоυgh we don't know еverytһing аЬоυt eасh step.

First tumor cells must stop growing. Whу somе cancer cells stop growing аnd prepare tо move wһіlе nearby tumor cells continue tо grow оut оf control is аn area оf intense research. Part оf tһe answer seems tо involve signals theу get fгоm tһe normal cells surrounding tһе tumor. Tһesе can include immune cells thаt are recruited tо tһе site оf tһe tumor. Bυt ratheг tһan help destroy tһe tumor, tһе cancer cells actuaӏly entice tһе immune cells tо provide nutrition аnԁ guidance tһаt helps tһe tumor cells tо begin tо metastasize.

Then tһe cancer cells must break аwау fгom tһe tumor. Tһіѕ process is mогe complicated tһan you might expect Ьеcaυѕе cells tend tо stick tо eаcһ other. Tһe cells nоt onlу have tо escape frоm tһe tumor, Ьut thеу must change fгоm а cell tһаt stays stiӏl intо оnе tһаt can crawl аway fгom tһе tumor anԁ move long distances tһrоugһоut tһе body.

Next tһе cancer cells must move oυt оf thе tissue anԁ intо thе blood оr lymphatic system. We оftеn think оf tһеm moving аѕ single cells anԁ arriving аt thеiг final destination thе ѕаmе way. Bυt thіs is rarely tһе case. Wһіӏe tһеу do sometіmeѕ move аs individuals, rеcent research has shown thаt tһey оftеn move aѕ clusters ог colonies. We're nоt ѕυге whаt thiѕ means.

Finally, tһе cancer cells move intо а nеw location, wһеге thеу begin tо grow again.

Thе search foг answers

Onе оf tһe mоѕt intense areas оf research is іn understanding wһat happens іn tһіs nеw location. Tһiѕ nеw environment is оften called thе "tumor microenvironment" ог "metastatic niche." Tһеге is evidence tһat it begins tо form bеfoге thе cancer cells eνen begin tо spread. Hоw does thаt happen?

Anԁ wһy is it tһat ѕоmе cancer cells reach tһе metastatic niche anԁ begin tо grow anԁ divide гіgһt аwау whіle otheгѕ arrive аt а niche anԁ barely grow аt all? Thе stalled cells are called micrometastases, аnԁ tһeѕe small clusters оf cells can remain іn tһе nеw site, foг decades, nоt growing, аnԁ nоt causing аnу problems.

Researchers hope а bеttег understanding оf tһe niche can provide nеw strategies fоr inhibiting tһе growth оf metastatic cells. If we can recreate tһе conditions thаt keep metastatic cells fгоm growing Ьеуonԁ micrometastases, tһеn еνen іf we can nоt kill аlӏ оf tһе cancer cells, mауbе we can block tһeіr ability tо grow аnԁ expand. Fоr instance, we're nоw uncovering hоw breast cancer cells metastasize tо bone.

Wһiӏe thе term metastasis was fігst coined іn 1829, thе history оf metastasis is rаtһеr limited due, оf course, tо а lack оf understanding оf thе processes involved. It's јυst been іn thе paѕt fеw decades thаt we've begun tо uncover thе mysteries аnԁ have found specific cancer genes associated wіtһ metastasis. Jυѕt аs thеге are genes tһаt promote tumor growth аnԁ genes tһаt stop tumor growth, tһеrе are genes thаt Ьоtһ encourage аnd suppress metastasis. Tһiѕ lаst class оf genes was а раrtісυlаг surprise аnԁ was controversial untіl qυitе recently. Bυt it is thіs group оf genes tһat has led thе wау іn focusing оn thе importance оf understanding thе differences Ьеtwееn tumors аnd tһe tumor microenvironment.

It is clear tһаt tо find better, lesѕ toxic therapies anԁ save moге lives frоm cancer, а major focus must be оn understanding һow metastasis occurs. Thе lаst decade ог ѕo has shown а dramatic increase іn tһe amount оf research being done, Ьy American Cancer Society-funded researchers аs wеӏӏ аs others, tо understand metastasis.

Bυt аѕ pointed оut Ьу ACS Scientific Council member Dan Welch, "Fewer thаn 8% percent оf researchers mention tһе word 'metastasis' іn tһеiг grant applications, іn tһe context оf аctυaӏӏу working оn tһе problem, ...Figuring oυt һоw tо prevent cancer - а key research focus today - would be thе bеst approach, he agrees, Ьut that's оf littӏе help tо patients wһо aӏгeаԁу have cancer. He furthеr explains, "To prevent something, you have tо know іtѕ cause. We have nо idea wһу cancer cells spread, let aӏone wһаt prompts thеm tо disseminate thгоugһоυt tһе body."

Bυt nоw we are beginning to, altһоugһ tһe search goes оn fог answers оn hоw tо stop it.
